DAMASCUS, Feb. 14 () -- Standing sheepishly by the door of his shop and inviting passers-by to buy flowers for Valentine, Mohammad Radhi, a florist, said he had reluctantly decorated the shop's windows with red flowers in a heart shape and hung red balloons in all corners of his small shop."In fact, I feel great embarrassment to the idea of decorating my shop with red flowers at the time when the country is passing through very delicate and even sad moments," said Radhi.Syria is a Muslim country where people see Valentine's Day as a Western trend which should not be celebrated by Muslims, but more recently it became a popular event especially among young people. However, Valentine of this year is different since the country' s 11-month-old unrest has lately turned into a barrage of terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of dozens of people."I don't even dare to look at the deep red flowers because they remind me of the blood of those who have been recently killed and whose blood has stained walls, buildings and floors," said Mona Hamwi, a housewife when asked whether she wants to buy flowers or to celebrate Valentine's Day.Two suicide blasts rocked the northern province of Aleppo over the weekend and killed 28 people and injured 234 others. The blasts were preceded by other three in the capital Damascus last December which claimed the lives of scores of civilians and army personnel. The attacking style of the recent events bore the hallmark of al-Qaida, which recently ordered its followers to sneak into Syria for Jihad against the Syrian government forces. The Syrian government has blamed the unrest in Syria on plots by terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs, and said that more than 2,000 army and security personnel were killed during the past months. The United Nations put the death toll in the Syrian unrest at more than 5,400."Yes, I bought flowers and I will celebrate Valentine but not with a boyfriend but rather with all Syrians to demonstrate to the entire world that we are peace-loving nation that wants nothing but simply to live peacefully," said Hanan Awad, 18, who carried a bunch of roses and walked in Bab Touma Street in Damascus."Life must go on," she said. "I would like to get out of this sad mood and be optimistic that no more red color would be seen on ground."
