TEHRAN, Jan. 3 () -- A Tehran court sentenced the daughter of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani to six months in jail over anti-regime propaganda, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Tuesday.Faezeh Hashemi was also sentenced to a 5-year ban of political, cultural and media activities on the charges of propagandistic acts against the Islamic republic, said the report.The former president's daughter can appeal the sentence within 20 days.Faezeh Hashemi has taken part in the protests against the disputed results of the presidential elections in June 2009 and was briefly detained for her involvement in the demonstrations.Protests gripped Tehran and other Iranian cities after the June 12, 2009 presidential elections amid claims that the vote had been rigged in favor of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.Iran's state media said the death toll from the violence during the protests totaled about 30 and more than 1,000 protesters and dozens of reformists were arrested, most of whom the authorities said were later released.The two reformist candidates for presidency, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, have been under house arrest.
BEIJING, Feb. 21 () -- China will strictly supervise the construction of affordable housing projects to ensure quality, a government official said Tuesday.Zhang Xueqin, deputy director of the housing security department under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said the ministry will supervise the entire construction process, including geological surveying, designing, construction and inspection upon completion, for all affordable housing projects.The legal entities responsible for the housing projects will be required to take lifelong liability for the quality of their projects, Zhang said.He also said that the ministry will further improve support policies concerning quality management.China has vowed to build 36 million affordable housing units during the 2011-2015 period to meet the demands of low-income families. In 2011, it started construction on 10 million units.Construction on at least 7 million units will begin this year, bringing the total number of units under construction to 17 million, according to the ministry.
