BEIJING, Jan. 17 () -- "Frequent hazy days triggering public concern" was listed among the top ten environmental news items for 2011 by China Environment News, a newspaper run by the environment ministry. The lists, one for domestic news and the other for world news in the environmental arena, were unveiled by the newspaper on Tuesday. The newspaper said smoggy days shrouded the skylines of Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Jinan and many other Chinese cities during October and November 2011, which heated up public discussion on air quality measuring standards. The incident was magnified as the U.S. Embassy in Beijing rated the air as "hazardous," whereas the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau said the pollution was "slight."It was later discovered that the discrepancy resulted from different air pollution measurement standards adopted by the two countries. On Nov. 17, the Ministry of Environmental Protection began soliciting public feedback on the draft of the revised Environmental Air Quality Standards, which includes the measurement of PM2.5, finer microscopic airborne particles, and ozone density. The new standards are expected to be fully implemented in 2016.Other top news items include U.S. company ConocoPhillips' oil spill at Bohai Bay, Japan's earthquake and ensuing nuclear leak crisis, and the Horn of Africa suffering a drought rarely seen in 60 years, among others.
WELLINGTON, June 7 () -- Hundreds of people in New Zealand's earthquake- battered Canterbury region were spending a second night without power Thursday as freezing weather continued. The near-record low temperatures for June have brought snow and ice, closing roads, bringing down power lines and stopping or delaying flights into and out of Christchurch.Radio New Zealand reported Thursday that temperatures dropped to minus 10 degrees centigrade over Wednesday night in parts of Canterbury, bringing further misery to people living in earthquake- damaged homes. The Canterbury Communities Earthquake Recovery Network (Cancern) , representing people with damaged homes, called for the government to provide emergency accommodation during the next snow storm.Spokesperson for the Wider Earthquake Recovery Network, Reverend Mike Coleman, told Radio New Zealand that many people were forced to stay in badly damaged homes due to the delays in repairs and a shortage of suitable rental properties.Police in Canterbury Thursday advised motorists to be extra careful as near freezing temperatures at night were likely to freeze snowmelt and cause black ice.Public transport in Christchurch was much reduced as buses stopped running earlier than usual, and Air New Zealand and Jetstar were forced to cancel or delay flights because of ice and freezing temperatures at Christchurch Airport.WeatherWatch forecasters said more frosts were possible, although the conditions were likely to ease Friday."For the first week of June these temperatures are near record breakers," WeatherWatch weather analyst Richard Green said in a statement."This is what you might see happen in the middle of July or perhaps August but this early in the season, well it's a bit of a short and sharp shock to the system."Canterbury has been rocked by earthquakes since September 2010, including a magnitude 6.3 quake that killed 185 people in Christchurch on Feb. 22 last year.
